Over the summer months we will be gathering stories and images from a wide range of events to provide some great ideas to inspire you in your planning.
Below you can find an example from a few events that represent a range differing scales, but all of which will benefit from the advice in this Toolkit.
Paradise Gardens, Victoria Park
An all ages, family oriented, free access show held over two days in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets.
The event was known for the breadth and quality of its artistic programming, attracting performers from around the world, brought about in part by successful collaborations with organisations such as The Barbican. Circus and Outdoor Theatre were also prominent programme features, with internationally recognised companies such as Laika’s ‘Sensazione’ and Circus Ronaldo’s La Cucina Dell’Arte appearing on the bill.
The Street Party
Wilton Way, Hackney: Royal Wedding Street Party
Residents, local business owners and artists came together for 2011’s Royal Wedding to host a community street party. The event was held with an open invitation policy and successfully attracted a cross section of the community. Having gained the support of Hackney Borough Council, attendees were encouraged to bring food and drink to enjoy in a picnic style – and even their own table to join the chain running the length of the road! The street was bedecked in bunting, gardens were opened to all and lots of fun was had by all.
The Community Event
The London Mela, Gunnersbury Park
The London Mela, Europe’s biggest festival inspired by south asian culture, was founded in 2003 and by 2010 was attracting over 92,000 people.
With more than eight zones, including urban, classical and experimental music; DJs, circus, dance, theatre, visual arts, comedy and the Magic Mela children’s area, not to mention a market area with food vendors from across the globe, it’s a festival of broad scope and high ambition.
Ealing Council, the Mayor of London in association with Hounslow Council all work with a commercial production company to produce this event which also involves partnerships with the BBC radio network, BBC London and several commercial sponsors.
